Interview questions/riddlers - Answers

Question: Suppose we have 8 coins that look/smell/taste/roll exactly the same and a balance like the one in the picture. One of the coins is fake, it weights less than the rest. How can we find the fake coin with only two weightings.

Answer:
  1. We weight 6 coins - 3 on each side.
  2. If their weight is the same
    1. We weight the remaining two to find the fake coin (the lighter one)
  3. If 3 coins are lighted than the rest
    1. We pick two of them and weight them on the scale (one on each side)
    1. If their weight equals then the lighter is the remaning coin
    1. Else the lighted in the scale is the fake one

Question: Suppose there is a rope of certain length and a lighter. How can someone find the exact midpoint of the rope?

Answer: We light the rope from each side. Where the fire meets then thats the middle of the rope

Interview questions/riddlers

Ok guys. I have collected a few interview questions, in the form of riddlers, that I have encountered the past couple of years. So:

Question: Suppose we have 8 coins that look/smell/taste/roll exactly the same and a balance like the one in the picture. One of the coins is fake, it weights less than the rest. How can we find the fake coin with only two weightings.

Question: Suppose there is a rope of certain length and a lighter. How can someone find the exact midpoint of the rope?

Nery Castillo vs Brazil (2-0)

I was 18 years old when I saw him on the street. He was with Giovanni Oliveira, the great striker of Olympiacos. I am actually sure that people haven't even heard of Nery Castillo at that point. Now, in his early 20s, not only he has Europe at his feet, but yesterday he helped Mexico win Brazil with his solo. But the point of this post is not to introduce him or to hail him for his performance against Brazil (watch videos at the end).

About five months ago he could have joined the greek national team, but the greek football federation decided that he is not suitable for us. But which one of them is qualified to judge the talent of the Mexican boy? What is your job anyway? Because the last few years we have seen no improvements of any kind in the greek football...And this incident people who lead the greek football are occupied with a great deal of other stuff, but football. Congratulations guys, you just crossed the line to completely useless.

Open a Wine Bottle without a Bottle Opener

Ok. So I come back from uni, having walked 30 minutes under the summer rain in Glasgow and bought a nice red white to accompany my lunch. But how in earth would I open it without a bottle opener? I literally brought the house upside-down to find, but no luck.

But there are always alternatives. Here it is, the way to open a bottle without a bottle opener:

You need a screw, a screw driver and pliers.

  1. Screw the 3/4 of the screw in the cork with the screwdriver
  2. Use the pliers to pull the cork out
  3. Drink wine

Come back to this blog and let me know how it worked out.

Dead pixel fix

Just realized today that in my precious Sony Vaio SZ3XP, there is a dead pixel. I never had a dead pixel in my monitors, nor I have seen one. I thought that there was no way back. I had heard loads of horror stories with monitors having dead pixels out of the box. And yes, warranty does not cover a few dead pixels.

However, thanks to the authors of this post, i managed to fix it. The method to follow is straight-forward:
  1. Get one of these pens from your drawer.
  2. Locate the dead pixel
  3. Carefully apply pressure on the pixel (you will see a white glow under the point of contrast)
  4. Continue this for 5-6 times till the pixel heals itself.
For the last time no, you cannot hold me responsible for damage you caused by using this method. Always a pleasure :)

Panathinaikos - Olympiacos Basketball Finals

Due to the amazing turn of the greek basketball finals, journalists and "journalists" have all dig out their notes from the 90's. It's no secret that in Greece, everyone tries to take advantage of the latest news.

A major greek sports radio have published today almost 10 articles on the basketball finals, when only a couple were published on an average day. This of course can only satisfy people who love basketball, not only now, but also in the past years that wasn't the most popular sport among Greece.

Such games advertise basketball across Europe. Euroleague.com named the 3rd final "The best game of the decade!". Let's just hope, this is just the start.

Introduction

Hi guys. This is my first-ever post as a blogger. I guess a small introduction is needed.

My name is Ioannis, I have recently graduated from Glasgow university with a degree in Software Engineering. I am currently a researcher (MPhil) in Glasgow university for everything related to user profiling, personalizations and recommendation systems.

My main hobby is gipedaki.gr, a greek website about five-a-side football with recent news, online bookings and tournaments. The website was built from scratch in PHP5 and mysql.
